Taking a few days in July to visit Tianmen Shan in Zhangjiajie, Hunan China was a real treat. Zhangjiajie is famous for being one of the locations scouted for and inspiring the Hallelujah Mountains in the movie Avatar, so it’s a MUST SEE in Hunan.
Zhangjiajie is really split into a few sections but mainly two, Zhangjiajie City and Zhangjiajie Village, are where you want to go. Zhangjiajie City is near Tianmen Shan (Mountain) and the surrounding countryside while Zhangjiajie Village is part of the Zhangjiajie Forest National Park. Since the timing was fairly short, we chose to only visit Tianmen Shan, then head off the following day to Fenghuang (Click here for the Fenghuang Gallery. It’s worth it!).
I think it was a good decision as it allowed us the chance to meander through the mountain at our own pace. Tianmen Mountain has a primitive forest, numerous rare tree species, medicinal herbs and an abundance of fauna. If we had more time, we could’ve checked out the glass floored walkways along cliffs, but we’ll save that for when there’s more time. The following gallery is of Tianmen Shan, Tianmen Shan cable car, and the amazing Tianmen Temple.
